A knee sprain refers to a ligamentous injury of the knee. Most of the time, this injury is sports related resulting from a twist or a direct blow. The end result of the trauma is either a stretched ligaments(s), a partially or completely torn ligament(s). Pain, swelling, and a sense of instability while walking are common presenting complaints.Initial treatment of a knee sprain consist of rest, ice, immobilization, and elevation of the joint. A severe sprain may require prolonged immobilization and sometimes, surgery.
